As the festive season is coming to an end, we have all had a healthy dose of relatives and family time. No matter how much we like to think that our family is unique, when it comes down to it, all Indian families have the same cast of characters.

1. The Cheek Puller

No matter how old you get or how many faces you make, they always insist on greeting you with a cheek pull and telling you how they remember you when you we “this little” or how “you have gotten healthy” or how “it is high time you got married.”

There is always that modelesque relative with the best fashion sense. She always looks perfect from head to toe. Her style and good looks can even make a garbage bag look like a Manish Malhotra lehenga.

3. The Constant Complainer

Nothing and no one is every good enough for this relative. They always have to find a reason to be unhappy and to find fault. And for some reason they always have the loudest voice, which helps them to let everyone know of their displeasure.

4. The Money Machine

This relative is like a loaded ATM. Whether it is some sort of underlying guilt, a desire to show off, or true generosity, this relative always has an envelope with your name on it sitting in their pocket. You just have to politely wait for the moment when they decide to bestow it upon you and hope that your parents don’t say it is too much and return it.

As if family gatherings aren’t loud enough, there is always that one relative who has to constantly add to the noise pollution. It is as they they have just come off of a “maun vrat” (a time of silence) that they can’t stop jabbering for even a second. They consistently keep talking and expect you to pay attention to every word. So you find yourself just nodding the whole time, feigning interest.

This relative should have been born in a foreign land, to a foreign family, but alas, they are a part of your family and you have to put up with them. They insist on wearing “fashionable” clothes regardless of whether or not they suit them. And they only talk in some undecipherable language, which they claim to be English. If nothing else, they antics make for a good after dinner laugh.

They are the orthodox traditions police of your family always ready to reign in anyone who may be breaking the mould. They are a conformist and insist that everything should be done exactly the way it has been done for the past 100 years. Their own kids may be rebels, but they are there to ensure that your parents kids (namely you) are a prim and proper “ideal” Indian.

8. The Big Mouth

There is always that one relative who constantly ends up with their foot in their mouth. They talk too much and that always lends them in trouble. They always have to say that one statement too many that either results in an awkward silence in the room or a heated blow up. No matter how much you try to stop them with your eyes, they don’t get it.

This relative is the most awesome. They totally understand you and you know your secret is safe with them. They give the best advice and encourage you to “just be you.” They are modern and progressive thinking and are definitely your go-to relative when you need someone to convince your parents.

Our families are a hodge podge of characters, but when it comes down to it, we love them all and life would be boring without them!
